In honor of the country's Veterans, several local observances are planned Wednesday.
A parade is planned for the San Fernando Valley and cities throughout the region are celebrating local veterans with special programming.
Governor Arnold Gov. Schwarzenegger is expected to deliver remarks at the Los Angeles National Cemetery Veterans' Day Program Wednesday morning.
A candlelight vigil remembering veterans of all wars will be held at the Airtel Hotel in Van Nuys in the evening.
Government offices, agencies, banks, courts and post offices will be closed.
Trash pick up in Los Angeles will operate as usual and Metro-operated buses and trains, Metrolink trains and Foothill Transit will run on a normal schedule.
Veterans Day's roots began with President Woodrow Wilson designating Nov. 11 as Armistice Day in 1919, a year after World War I ended.
Soon after, states declared Nov. 11 a legal holiday, with congress making it a federal holiday in 1938.
In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress passed a law renaming Armistice Day as Veterans Day.
From 1971-1977, Veterans Day was held in late October and a 1975 law put it to Nov. 11, starting in 1978.
