Maid Service Owners Held, Ordered To Pay $3.5M

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― Federal officials say the owners of a Southern California cleaning company were jailed for several days after failing to pay back wages to at least 385 workers.

The U.S. Labor Department said Wednesday the owners of Southern California Maid Service and Carpet Cleaning did not heed a 2007 court order to pay $3.5 million in back wages and penalties.

The Department says Sergio Maldonado and Lorenza Rubio of Rolling Hills Estates were arrested Friday and released Tuesday. A federal judge in Santa Ana ordered them to pay $3.5 million by Nov. 12.

The Labor Department sued the company in 2006. The court ruled that the company wrongly classified its workers and failed to pay them minimum wage or overtime.

A message was left at the company seeking comment.
