Riverside Man, 21, Shot And Killed In Vacant Lot

RIVERSIDE Responding to a call of shots being fired in the area, Riverside police found a 21-year-old man mortally wounded laying in a pool of blood early Sunday morning.

Pat Watters, a Riverside police sargeant, said the victim, Vernon Salcido, had been shot in the chest.

Salcido was pronounced dead at Riverside Community Hospital.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, police went to the 4100 block of Douglas Avenue in Riverside to investigate a report of gunshots. Salcido was found in a vacant lot.

Paramedics rushed the man to the hospital where he was taken into surgery, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Police said the shooting was being investigated as a possible homicide.
