A man was killed Thursday during a shootout with sheriff's deputies on the Soboba Indian Reservation, a sheriff's detective said.
No deputies were hurt in the gunfight near Soboba Road and Castile Canyon about 12:15 a.m., Jerry Franchville said.
The shootout included at least three men and sheriff's deputies, who heard gunshots and were fired upon when they went to investigate, he said.
"The nearest backup hadn't reached the deputies yet when the suspects engaged with the deputies," Franchville said.
Deputies could see from the flashes of the gunfire that at least two of the men were armed with "assault rifles."
Franchville said there could have been more assailants, but noted that it was pitch black.
Deputies killed one man who had a rifle, he said.
No arrests were made.
