Arrest Made In Double Murder Outside Church

1 Victim Was In A Wheelchair, The Other Man Was Pushing Him

COMPTON, Calif. Police say they have arrested one suspect --with another suspect being sought -- in connection with Sunday's double homicide outside a church in Compton.

Monday police identified two men (one who was in a wheelchair) shot and killed while walking outside that church about 1:30 p.m.

The fatal shooting -- the fourth in Compton since Thursday --  occured in the 600 block of Alameda Street, Deputy Aura Sierra of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

Rigoberto Vega, 23, of Compton, was pushing the man in the wheelchair, who has been identified as 32-year-old David Gallegos. Both men, childhood friends on their way to pick up take-out meals from an area IHOP, were declared dead at the scene.

Gallegos, ironically, was in the wheelchair as the result of an accidental shooting six years ago.

A gunman pulled up next to the men and opened fire, Sierra said.

The vehicle, which had been abandoned, was later found in the 2000 block of 127th Street, she said.

According to the LA Times, while police were serving search warrants in the neighborhood where the car was found, Andrew Lemus, 19, turned himself in to investigators.

It was unknown if the shooting was gang-related, but neither victim was believed to be in a gang.

Dejuan Andino, 28, of Compton, was fatally shot Thursday in the 900 block of South Essey Avenue, and around 2 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot to death in the 200 block of West Alondra Boulevard. It was unclear if the shootings were related.

Anyone with information regarding the shootings was asked to contact Sheriff's Homicide Detectives at (323) 890-5500.
