A civil rights group said the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has agreed to update its anti-bias training as part of a settlement over the arrest of 33 black college students.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California said Monday the settlement resolves a claim brought against the department for stopping and searching students based on their race during an incident at Los Angeles Trade Tech College in October 2007.
The ACLU said the Sheriff's Department will also expand diversity training and develop community outreach programs.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said the department and a review office found deputies did not engage in racial profiling, but that the sheriff is always looking for ways to improve training.
