LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Sheriff Lee Baca angrily defended his original release of hotel heiress Paris Hilton from jail in an appearance before the LA County Board of Supervisors.

He said Hilton had developed a psychological condition that could be life-threatening and that her mental state was "decompensating," or deteriorating. Exacerbating her condition, he said, was the fact she couldn't tell jailers exactly what medications she had been prescribed and a disagreement between her own physicians on how she should be treated.

Baca released Hilton to home detention three days after she began serving a 45-day sentence for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Her sentencing judge ordered her back to jail the next day.
