A judge has ruled that the mistress of a former Orange County sheriff will be tried separately on charges related to an alleged corruption scheme to exploit the power of the office for money.
U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Guilford on Tuesday declared a mistrial for Debra Hoffman and said she will no longer be tried with former sheriff Michael Carona, who was indicted last year on public corruption charges.
Prosecutors allege that Carona, Hoffman, Carona's wife Deborah and a close group of friends accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks over several years.
Hoffman is charged with conspiracy, mail fraud and bankruptcy fraud. She has pleaded not guilty.
Carona has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, mail fraud and witness tampering.
Carona's wife will be tried separately on a single charge of conspiracy.
