A woman, 72, was arrested in her mobile home Wednesday after she called police to say she had shot and killed her husband, 81, police said.
The woman, who lives in the 6000 block of Golden Sands Drive, made the call about 8:30 a.m., Officer Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department said.
Police did not release their names, but the Long Beach Press-Telegram quoted neighbors at Belmont Shores Mobile Estates, which caters to retired senior citizens, as identifying the couple as Sheila and Willard Faughnder.
They had lived in the park since the early 1980s, according to fellow residents.
None of the neighbors heard a gunshot, and they said that he may have been dead for a couple of days.
The wife was a regular at a shooting range, according to Roy Baufield, who has lived in the community for 34 years.
He said the couple had a history of fighting, and that Sheila had moved into an apartment for a while. The husband once paid for both the apartment and the space in the mobile home park. But about three years ago stopped doing so because he couldn't afford it, and she moved back in, Baufield said.
"Willie was just a great guy," Baufield said of the former security guard. "He was always helping people out and fixing things. She was a strange one, and that's a shame too, because Willie was a super guy."
Another neighbor, Evelyn Keller, placed a small pot of flowers in the spot where the victim used to sit almost every day with a cup of coffee.
