Woman Gets Life In Deaths Of Elderly Couple

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A woman convicted in the murders of an elderly Monrovia couple during a home invasion robbery has been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

A Los Angeles judge Thursday gave 35-year-old Shawna Robles two consecutive life terms for the murders of 78-year-old Clark Shaum and his 70-year-old wife, Bernice.

Prosecutors say the two victims were stabbed to death in July 2003.

Robles wept and apologized during her sentencing hearing.

She was convicted April 24 of first-degree murder for killing the couple, but the jury rejected the allegation that Robles had personally used a knife during the attacks.

Her alleged accomplice, 36-year-old Alfredo Valenzuela, is awaiting trial on the same charges.
