Santa Monica High School Monday won the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.
North Hollywood High School tied for sixth place after losing to Santa Monica, according to Walter Zeisl of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which sponsors the Southland contenders.
The U.S. Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage high school students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. More than 130,000 students have participated in the annual competition.
