Schwarzenegger's Plan Is No Quick Budget Fix

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking state lawmakers to jump-start the economy with billions of dollars in public works spending.

Experts commend Schwarzenegger's infrastructure spending plan as a good long-term recovery strategy, but they say it will not solve California's immediate cash shortage.

California is facing a projected $28 billion deficit over the next 18 months. But it can take years for roads, schools, levees and bridges to be built.

Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said the governor's plan would get money out faster by cutting down the environmental review process.

Schwarzenegger has also joined other governors in asking President-elect Barack Obama for federal infrastructure funding.
