SYLMAR (AP) ― Los Angeles County officials and a hospital are investigating why the medical center lost power when the wind-whipped Sayre wildfire roared through the campus.

The outage on Saturday forced staffers at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center to use hand-powered ventilators to help keep critical patients alive.

Hospital spokeswoman Carla Nino said Monday the investigation will be done by the hospital and the county Department of Public Works. The hospital also plans to hire a consultant to perform an independent probe.

The Sayre fire destroyed several outbuildings, but did not damage the hospital, where some 200 patients were being treated.
