Vet Killed In Long Beach Had Rough Military Past

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― Army officials say a young veteran killed with his girlfriend in Long Beach on New Year's Day had a troubled stint in the military.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. George Wright on Monday confirmed that Sarith Em was convicted of larceny and burglary and in 2006 for stealing from the barracks and vehicles of deployed soldiers while he was stationed in Fort Drum, New York.

Em was sentenced to 22 months of military confinement and was discharged last May.

He had served a tour in Afghanistan in 2004.

The 25-year-old Em and his 24-year-old girlfriend Vannaly Tim were gunned down outside a New Year's Eve party last week.

Authorities have few leads in the investigation and have asked for the public's help.
