Red Flag Warning Continues On Christmas Day

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (CBS) ― Fierce winds at times reaching hurricane strength swept Southern California on Tuesday, prompting forecasters to issue a red flag warning signifying a high risk of wildfire in portions of six counties.

Winds gusting at 90 miles per hour in Whitaker Peak, a mountainous area of Los Angeles County, and 78 mph in Malibu Hills were recorded overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued a red flag warning for much of Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties because of the high winds, combined with low humidity levels expected to drop to single digits Tuesday afternoon.

The red flag warning was scheduled to expire at 6 p.m. in San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the warning was scheduled to remain in effect until 8 p.m. in some areas and 10 p.m. in others.

The warning was in effect in the region's mountains, valleys and forests as well as coastal areas of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

The winds were blamed for triggering widespread power outages in sections of Los Angeles County, where nearly 10,000 customers lost power Monday night, with around 5,000 having power restored Tuesday morning.
