Deaf, Mute Man Injured After Robbery
SANTA ANA, Calif.
A man incapable of hearing or speaking and who may have witnessed a robbery in Santa Ana was dragged out of his vehicle by the suspects, cut on his forehead and left stranded after they left in the victim's vehicle.
The alleged robbery occurred at 1309 N. Jackson St. right before 10 p.m. Monday, Santa Ana police Sgt. Tharon Reed said.
The victim "may have witnessed a robbery in progress," he said, adding that the bandits -- at least two people -- saw him and dragged him out of his car, Reed said.
One of the suspects was carrying a knife and inflicted a minor cut on the victim's forehead, he said, adding that they fled in his car.
Authorities are unsure how many suspects were involved.
"Initially we had the victim's sister at the scene, to give us basic information on what happened," Santa Ana police Sgt. Jim Armstrong said around 3 a.m.
"Right now we're in the process of trying to get a certified state registered sign language person to help us out and get a statement from him," he said, adding that it was police protocol to use a certified interpreter when dealing with victims who cannot speak or hear, rather than rely on written questions and answers.
