A pilot was killed when a small plane crashed in the heavily populated suburb of San Gabriel northeast of Los Angeles.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the 1977 single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed and caught fire shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, killing the only person on board.
The plane departed from Brackett Field in La Verne about 25 miles east of the crash site and was on a short flight to Van Nuys.
NewsCentral's Kristine Lazar reported the plane tried to make an emergency landing in a parking lot but ran out of room, skidded across a street and hit a brick wall. The pilot managed to avoid homes and a bakery, but could not avoid slamming into a fence.
There are no reports of injuries to anyone on the ground and no immediate word of what caused the crash.
The name of the victim has not been released. The plane is registered to David E. Flotho of Grants Pass, Ore.
Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the scene.
