A rare California condor chick has vanished from its Mexico nest and may have died, setting back efforts to restore the giant vulture to Baja California.
Biologists checking on the month-old chick in a Baja national park found the nest empty earlier this week.
The San Diego Zoo, home to condor recovery efforts, thinks the chick may have been killed by a predatory golden eagle or died from a parasite infestation.
Condor expert Mike Wallace says it was the first chick hatched in Mexico in a century and also the first offspring of a breeding couple placed there as part of a recovery effort.
Wallace says it's not unexpected for inexperienced condor parents to fail the first time they try to raise a chick.
There are still eleven condors in Baja, including the breeding pair.
