Marine Found Shot In Brush Near Camp Pendleton

SAN CLEMENTE The body found in the brush off a winding road in San Clemente Thursday, has been identified as a Camp Pendleton Marine, according to authorities.

Police say the man had a gunshot wound to his upper body.

A hiker discovered the body in the 1000 block of Calle Cordillera about 9 a.m., said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The man had been dressed in sand-color military fatigues commonly worn
by Marines, Amormino said.

"He's a Marine in his early 20s (on) active duty. I'm not sure about service in Iraq at this time. We're still waiting to make some more notifications before I reveal too much about who he is, but he did sustain a gunshot wound."

Authorities do not know if the man was killed where he was found or his body was dumped there, Channel 9 reported.

Camp Pendleton had not reported this Marine missing, KCAL9 reported.

The body may have been there for about a day or two, according to authorities.
