Boy Hospitalized After Bike Slams Into Patrol Car
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.
A 10-year-old boy was recovering from injuries he suffered when his bicycle slammed head-on into a sheriff's patrol car in San Clemente, police said.
The boy was on his way to school when the accident happened about 7:30 a.m. on Calle Bahia, a street with a steep incline and a blind curve, California Highway Patrol Officer Goodwin said.
CHP is investigating the case to avoid an appearance of conflict of interest, Goodwin said.
The boy's name was not released.
The boy was going south in the northbound side while approaching the blind curve before his bicycle slammed into the deputy's car, which was driving north at about 20 mph. The bicycle hit the right front side of the patrol car, throwing the boy onto the roof, Goodwin said.
The boy was wearing a helmet, which "we believe played a major role in keeping the child from receiving major injuries," Goodwin said.
The boy was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, but Goodwin said he expected him to be released quickly.
