Officials ID Girl, 3, Killed In 5 Freeway Crash

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. Authorities identified Sunday a 3-year-old girl, who was killed in a traffic crash on the San Diego (5) Freeway in San Clemente on Saturday, officials said.

The victim was identified as Carla Mondragon-Rodriguez from Santa Ana, Supervising Deputy Coroner Kelly Crawford said.

The fatal crash took place at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of the 5 freeway south of El Camino Real in San Clemente.

The girl was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the Orange County Register.

The accident happened when a man lost control of his Ford Expedition. The trailer he was towing rolled onto its side, the Register reported.

Two other girls suffered minor injuries. Jasmine Pena, 5, and Stephanie Mondragon, 9, were transferred to San Clemente Hospital, along with the toddler, who was later declared dead there.

Jimmy Melendez, 49, who was driving the Expedition, and wife Beatrice were uninjured in the crash.
