Forget Me Knot: Gays Rush To Wed Before Nov. 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― Gay couples from around California and the nation are feverishly tying the knot ahead of Election Day.

The couples say they don't want to miss the opportunity to marry if voters approve a ballot initiative banning gay marriage.

The ballot initiative, Proposition 8, has been gaining support in public opinion polls.
 
San Francisco Clerk-Recorder Karen Hong Lee says gay couples are getting uneasy.

Lee has increased the number of marriage-license reservations her office accepts and assigned a second marriage commissioner to perform weddings.

Even so, her office is booked solid through Oct. 21 for license appointments.

Proposition 8 would amend the state constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman. If approved, it would overturn a California Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.
