An alleged female gang member Tuesday was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old woman near a freeway off-ramp in South Los Angeles.
Jessica Ortega, 30, was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in connection with Samantha Padilla's death.
Padilla was on her way home from LAX, where she worked as a baggage handler, at 12:15 a.m. Thursday when she was shot to death near the Slauson Avenue off-ramp of the northbound 110 Freeway.
A Ford Bronco pulled up next to Padilla's car and she was shot several times. She died at a hospital about 30 minutes later, police said.
Ortega, a resident of the Ramona Gardens public housing complex in Boyle Heights, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder.
Authorities believe the crime was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang.
Prosecutors asked that Ortega's bail be set at $2 million.
If convicted, Ortega faces a maximum state prison term of 50 years to life, according to the District Attorney's Office.
