Newborn Baby Was Surrendered To L.A. Fire Station

LOS ANGELES A newborn baby girl was surrendered at a South Los Angeles fire station, officials said today, becoming the fifth infant to be turned over this year under the "safe surrender" program.

The newborn was taken by its mother to the fire station on Monday, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. The infant was in good health. She was placed in protective custody and will eventually be put up for adoption.

"I want to thank this newborn's mother for doing the right thing," Knabe said. "The Safe Surrender Program continues to protect babies from
abandonment and give mothers a safe, secure and anonymous way to get their child into safe hands."

The infant is the 74th to be safely surrendered in Los Angeles County since the program began eight years ago. The program allows infants who are no
more than three days old and show no signs of abuse to be surrendered at
approved locations, such as hospitals and fire stations.
