Will More Women Be Joining The LAPD's SWAT Team?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ―

Law enforcement experts are urging changes in rigorous SWAT testing to make the LAPD's elite team more open to women.

The panel convened by police Chief William Bratton also says in a report obtained by the Los Angeles Times that SWAT needs tighter supervision special weapons officers rely too heavily on force.

The draft of the panel's confidential report angered SWAT members who say the changes would probably weaken the squad charged with handling high-risk operations.

The report was submitted to the chief more than one year ago.

Bratton has refused to make the report public or share the full contents with the Police Commission. The report's recommendations are expected to be presented to the commission within three months.
