Police Release 911 Call In Arrest Of Ryan O'Neal
Actor Says Use Of Gun Was In Self-Defense
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
There are conflicting accounts of who started the altercation leading to Ryan O'Neal's weekend arrest for alleged assault at his Malibu home.
The actor, 65, told the Los Angeles Times he was protecting himself against his enraged son, Griffin, who began, in O'Neal's words "wildly swinging a fireplace poker." O'Neal said his son grazed him four or five times. O'Neal said he became nervous and went to his room to get his gun.
But O'Neal's daughter, Tatum, who was not present during the incident, told "Entertainment Tonight" that Griffin was trying to protect his younger brother Redmond.
O'Neal was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was booked and released on $50,000 bond.
