A man accused of killing four women during the 1970s has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in Orange County.
A hearing is scheduled Wednesday to determine whether Rodney Alcala should have an evaluation by mental health experts. The 66-year-old man pleaded Friday.
He is charged with sexually assaulting and bludgeoning the women in Los Angeles County. The case is being heard in Orange County, where it was combined with Alcala's retrial for the murder of a 12-year-old Huntington Beach girl.
The girl, Robin Samsoe, was kidnapped in 1979 as she biked to ballet practice.
Alcala was twice convicted and sentenced to death in that case but the verdicts were overturned.
