Roberto Robles, 22, was shot and partially paralyzed May 29 by a Palm Springs police training officer who responded to a shots-fired call, police said.
A Palm Springs man shot by a police officer when he allegedly pointed a gun at the officer had his preliminary hearing on weapons charges delayed Thursday to try and settle the case.
Roberto Robles, 22, was shot and partially paralyzed May 29 by a Palm Springs police training officer who responded to a shots-fired call in the 300 block of Mariscal Road, Palm Springs Police Chief Gary Jeandron said.
Robles pushed the officer and a .22 caliber handgun fell from his waistband. Despite being warned by the officer, Robles reached for the gun and raised it toward the officer, who opened fire, Jeandron said.
He said witness accounts support the officer's version of what happened. Robles is charged with seven counts, including assault on a police officer with a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and other weapons-related charges.
At the request of the defense, Judge Graham A. Cribbs delayed the hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for Robles to stand trial until Nov. 15, so that attorneys for both sides can negotiate a plea agreement.
The shooting left Robles paralyzed from the waist down. He posted bail and is currently at Desert Regional Medical Center, according to his attorney, Joseph Ray.
"He'll never walk again," Ray said.
