Arrest Made In Deadly Inland Empire Shooting

2 Dead, Another Injured In Inland Empire Shooting

BLOOMINGTON A 20-year-old man was behind bars Sunday in San Bernardino and held on suspicion of involvement in the fatal shootings of a Riverside man and another man in Bloomington, jailers said.

John Gilbert Mata, 20, of Bloomington, was held without bail on two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of participating in a street gang crime, a jailer at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino said.

Deputies responded to the shootings at 6:24 p.m. Friday on 9th Street east of Pepper Street in Bloomington, less than a mile north of the Riverside County line, according to sheriff's Sgt. Tony De Cecio.

A sheriff's helicopter crew was first to respond and confirmed subjects were down. Deputies on the ground found Gregory Gutierrez, 30, of Riverside and Eduardo Gonzalez, 30, of Bloomington suffering from gunshot wounds, coroner's officials said.

Both were transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m. Friday, coroner's and sheriff's officials said.

A third shooting victim, George Gutierrez, 27, of Riverside underwent surgery and was expected to survive.

Late Saturday, deputies served a search warrant about 11:30 p.m. in the 15000 block of Kitfox Lane in Victorville, where Mata was taken into custody, said sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

Investigation of the shootings continued Sunday. Homicide investigators asked anyone with information to contact them at (909) 387-3589, or anonymously at (800) 782-7463.
