23-Year-Old Riverside Woman Fatally Hit By Train

ONTARIO A 23-year-old Riverside woman was killed Sunday after she drove onto railroad tracks south of Ontario International Airport and was hit by a freight train, police said.

The fatal accident occurred at 3:52 a.m. Sunday at what is supposed to be a dead-end for South Turner Avenue, just north of railroad tracks and Mission Boulevard, according to Ontario Sgt. Robert Freire.

"Turner dead-ends right there," said Ontario police Sgt. David Nicholson. "The road ended but the car didn't stop."

A Union Pacific conductor told investigators his freight train had struck a car that was stopped on the tracks, police said.

The woman's 2001 Toyota Corolla was eventually found at the bottom of the Lower Deer Creek flood control channel. She had been thrown from the car and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Union Pacific closed the tracks for several hours during the investigation, police said.

Police encouraged anyone who witnessed the accident to call (909) 395-2001.
