A Riverside County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man suspected of robbing a Moreno Valley store, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Brandon James Leban, 27, allegedly robbed an am/pm mini-mart at 23145 Hemlock Ave., just west of Graham Street, around 2:25 a.m. Thursday, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Deputies arrived within two minutes, just as the suspect was fleeing in a vehicle, said Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela.
The suspect led deputies on a one-block pursuit westbound, abandoning his vehicle in the 12100 block of Calle Sombra.
A foot chase ensued, ending seconds later outside the La Pacifica Apartments at 23400 Hemlock, where the suspect "refused to follow the (deputies') commands" to surrender, "resulting in the officer-involved shooting with the suspect being fatally shot," Valenzuela said.
Sheriff's officials later said Leban was running when a deputy ordered him to lie on the ground. Instead, he allegedly reached into his right front pants pocket and turned toward the deputy, prompting the deputy to shoot him.
Investigators recovered a silver "replica" handgun and money believed to have been taken in the robbery, sheriff's officials said.
"It's not a real gun," said sheriff's Investigator Jerry Franchville.
"A common term is a `toy gun.' It's not capable of firing actual ammunition."
As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the sheriff's homicide unit, Valenzuela said.
