Pryor's Widow Honors His Legacy With Dog Rescue

STUDIO CITY, Calif. (CBS) ― Jennifer Lee Pryor isn't a mail carrier, but like the postman who works through rain, sleet and the worst heat waves, her constant presence outside Rusty's Pet Store (11672 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City) on Sunday afternoons is just as inspiring.

Pryor is there as part of her company's dog rescue program Pryor's Planet.

The widow of legendary comedian and actor Richard Pryor, Jennifer says their shared love of animals (and most especially dogs) is what led the one-time divorced couple to reconcile and find their way back to each other.

Since Pryor's death in December 2005, Jennifer has even worked more tirelessly to help animals.

She has a few volunteers who help her out ("But I could always use more," she says). While Pryor is pretty tireless, lugging the dogs around, feeding and watering and housing and pampering and playing with all the dogs (46 at last count) is a bit of a chore. "We could use volunteers, real reliable people, and donations of course -- they're tax deductible -- they are always welcome, too!"

CBS2.com and KCAL9.com met up with Jennifer recently to talk to her about animal advocacy, her mission and support of dog rescue, her need for volunteers and her late husband's love of the planet, the environment and all creatures big and small.

Says Jennifer, "Richard always had a connection to animals, this passion. Even when he was ill and could no longer perform he could still find great purpose and great meaning with his work with animals."

Jennifer Lee Pryor admits that great meaning easily rubbed off on her. "Cesar Millan [the Dog Whisperer] told me something the other day," she says, "which is very true. Dogs don't care if you are a celebrity, or rich or poor, or if your bag is Gucci or Prada...they just want to be loved unconditionally."
