NTSB: Metrolink Train Ran Signal In Rialto

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― A federal investigator says a Metrolink commuter train ran a red signal before sideswiping a freight train that was easing onto a side track in Rialto.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ted Turpin said Friday the eastbound passenger train failed to stop Thursday at a red light about 150 feet before the spot where it hit the rear cars of an oncoming westbound BNSF freight train.

Turpin says the Metrolink train had nearly come to a halt before the incident, and the red signal appears to have been working. No serious injuries were reported.

Investigators are focusing on whether the passenger train had braking problems. Turpin says the Metrolink engineers had been attempting to stop the train.
