Upaid wages totalling $450,000 will be awarded to 60 workers at a Redondo Beach carwash in the settlement of a lawsuit brought against the owners by the California Labor Commission.
According to the Commission, the Bruno Scherrer Corporation which operates as the Hollywood Riviera, shorted their workers' earned wages and intentionally failed to record employees' total work hours. This resulted in some of their employees earning less than the state-mandated minimum wage, according to the lawsuit.
In October 2006, the Labor Commission started an investigation that revealed that Hollywood Riviera car wash had been paying workers minimum wage for as little as three or four hours of work, and then required them to work for tips only for the rest of the day, Labor Commissioner Angela Bradstreet said.
The Legislature codified a registration system in 2003 for all car wash and polishing businesses under the Car Wash Worker Law.
