Raw Sewage Into Laguna Beach Streets, Waters
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) ―
About 250,000 gallons of raw sewage have spilled into the street and ocean in Laguna Beach, forcing officials to close four miles of beaches.
Health officials say the spill at a pump station started around 2 a.m. Wednesday and city crews worked for eight hours to replace a broken pipe and turn off the leak.
Howard Sutter, spokesman for the Orange County Healthcare Agency, says the spill happened only a block away from the beach, so the effluent flowed from the street to the storm drain to the beach.
The agency, which monitors water quality, says beaches about two miles north and south of the spill will remain closed until water samples come back clean, which is not likely before Friday.
