What started out as hundreds quickly turned into an estimated 1,000 gay rights activists, who gathered in front of the Mormon Church Thursday in Westwood to object to California's new ban on gay marriage.
Protesters marching accused the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of spending millions to air deceptive advertisements in support of Proposition 8.
Mormon church spokesman Keith Atkinson said members were encouraged to support the ban on gay marriage, but the church made no institutional donations.
Los Angeles police arrested two people after a confrontation between the crowd and an occupant of a pickup truck that had a banner supporting Proposition 8.
Demonstrator Maurice Carriere says he was punched in the face during the confrontation. He was left with a bloody nose.
Officers were also seen struggling with one person on a sidewalk but it was unclear if the two incidents were related.
The protest snarled rush-hour traffic on the city's west side as marchers headed toward Beverly Hills.
The measure passed on Tuesday with 52 percent of voters casting their ballot to define marriage as a heterosexual union.
