The FBI has arrested a retired Pasadena police officer suspected in at least five bank robberies.
Vincent Cantu of Whittier was arrested Wednesday in Orange County -- less than two weeks after La Habra police booked him on suspicion of robbery. He posted bail after that arrest but now faces a hearing Thursday in federal court.
Cantu is under investigation for two robberies this summer and three others dating back to 2006.
Authorities believe Cantu may be the so-called "Polite Bandit," who has robbed Banco Popular branches in La Mirada, Hacienda Heights and La Habra.
Police came up with the name "Polite Bandit" because they said the robber apologized to bank tellers, thanked them and said he was only trying to feed his children.
Cantu is an eight-year veteran of the Pasadena Police Department. He retired in 1996.
