Poizner Criticized For Proposing Rule Changes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ― California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is under fire from his predecessor and a consumer group for proposing regulation changes his critics said would lead to millions of dollars in higher rates for auto, homeowner and most other lines of coverage.

The criticism is coming from consumer advocate Harvey Rosenfield and Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi. Rosenfield is the founder of the group Consumer Watchdog and the author of rate-regulating Proposition 103 of 1988.

Garamendi preceded Poizner as the state's chief insurance regulator.

A spokesman for Poizner said the main thrust of the regulations is to make it easier for insurer to cut rates.

He said the commissioner will consider consumer group criticism before issuing final rule changes.
