Crews Search For Teen Swept Out To Sea

MALIBU, Calif. (CBS) ― The search began at daybreak Sunday for an Oxnard teenager who was swept from the rocks at Point Mugu, just west of Malibu. Ventura County Fire Department helicopters and volunteer divers from the sheriff's office searched the rocky coast, as the 55-degree water was churned by large waves and high winds swept over Pacific Coast Highway and out to sea.

The victim was caught by a wave as he tried to untangle his fishing line at the rocks, just off PCH about five miles west of the Los Angeles County line.

Officials did not confirm they were searching for a body but chances for the boy to have survived were nonexistent, as his family told officials he is a poor swimmer.

State lifeguards from nearby La Jolla Cove in Malibu State Park were the first rescuers to arrive, and were joined by the Ventura County agencies and Coast Guard ships.

The body is expected to be carried by currents towards Malibu, officials said.

The boy's accident was witnessed by his brother, 18, and other relatives, who were taken home by a police chaplain.

The rocks at Point Mugu draw numerous fishing enthusiasts and can sometimes be deceptively calm. They are a frequent scene of tragedy, and numerous drowning incidents and injuries from falling from the crumbling shale cliffs have occurred there.
