Beach Bans Pigeon Feeding For Pollution Concerns

PISMO BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― Don't feed the birds. That's what Pismo Beach City Council is telling visitors to the city pier, where hundreds of pigeons roost and foul the ocean with droppings.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday night to prohibit people from feeding birds at the pier, the promenade and the Cypress Street Bridge. The ordinance becomes law in mid-July.

Several recent beach closures due to E-coli and bacteria contamination have been blamed on the pigeon droppings.

Public works director Dennis Delzeit says it remains to be seen how much enforcement will be necessary, but that officials hope visitors will voluntarily comply.
