Big Rig Hit-And-Run Crash Leaves Woman Critical

PICO RIVERA, Calif. The tractor of a big rig hit a compact car, sending the vehicle into a telephone pole and leaving the driver of the car with critical injuries in a hit-and-run accident at an intersection along the Pico Rivera-Downey city line, authorities said.

The accident at Telegraph Road and Paramount Boulevard was reported soon after 1:30 a.m., a dispatcher from the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The truck, without a trailer, allegedly hit the victim's compact in the intersection, causing it to bounce off a telephone pole, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Larry Collins told an On Scene Video camera crew. The driver of the big rig fled after the accident.

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to rescue the victim, who was trapped in the wreckage for about 20 minutes, Collins told On Scene, adding that she was taken to a nearby trauma center in critical condition.

Anyone with information on the crash or the hit-and-run driver is asked to call the sheriff's Pico Rivera Station at (562) 949-2421.
