A county transportation study has found making two of Los Angeles' urban arteries into one-way streets could improve east-west traffic by up to 20 percent.
The study commissioned by L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky looked at what would happen if Olympic and Pico boulevards were converted into one-way streets.
It found that vehicle capacity could increase by 20 percent with one-way streets and no left turns.
An alternative allowing left turns would increase vehicle capacity by nearly six percent.
Yaroslavsky and other proponents of the idea say it could improve traffic more cheaply than a Wilshire Boulevard subway or freeway widenings.
But opponents like L.A. transit chief Gloria Jeff say one-way thoroughfares would force motorists into smaller neighborhood streets, which would be bad for residents.
