San Clemente Man Suspect In Murder-For-Hire Plot

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities allege that a 30-year-old Orange County man tried to hire an undercover deputy to kill his ex-girlfriend so he could have custody of their 5-year-old son.

Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says Mortgage Broker Dan Villanueva Patino of San Clemente was arrested Monday on suspicion of solicitation to commit murder.

Four days earlier the department's Special Operations Bureau launched an undercover operation after a tip from another law enforcement agency.

Amormino says Patino offered $10,000 to the deputy to follow the girlfriend home from a party, kill her and make it look like a traffic accident.

Patino is being held on $1 million bail. A deputy who answered the phone early Wednesday did not know whether he had hired an attorney.
