Man Accused Of Stomping Murder Pleads Innocent

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A parolee who is accused of stomping a woman to death on Skid Row earlier this month pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder.

Gregory Hampton, 52, was initially charged with attempted murder, but the charge was changed when 49-year-old Kristi Morales died five days after the attack.

Hampton is being held on just more than $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 15.

Morales was attacked about 9 p.m. May 3 at Fifth and San Julian streets, just feet away from a nonprofit shelter that had available beds.

A day after the woman's death, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry and police Chief William Bratton urged the homeless to move into shelters for their own safety.

Morales is the fourth person killed by a state parolee on L.A.'s Skid Row since January, according to Perry.
