Pacific Park Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (CBS) ― Pacific Park, the only admission-free amusement park in Los Angeles, marked its 10th anniversary on the Santa Monica Pier Friday.

Since it opened in 1996, Pacific Park has hosted more than 10 million guests, according to park officials.

Guests have gobbled up about 462,000 orders of cotton candy and boarded for 24 million rides, including the Park's famous "Pacific Wheel" Ferris wheel, selected by Reader's Digest as Best in America in 2006.

"It's become this huge, iconic landmark for Southern California," said pier spokesman Cameron Andrews. "People recognize and see the Ferris wheel... and think of L.A."

"Pacific Park has been a wonderful, family-oriented addition to the Santa Monica Pier," Santa Monica City Councilwoman Pam O'Connor said. "I have fond memories of the opening and can't believe 10 years have flown by. I look forward to the next 10, with Pacific Park continuing to help draw tourists and Santa Monica families to the Pier."

The Santa Monica Pier opened in September 1909.
