Man Accused Of Extorting Firm That Fired Illegals

SANTA ANA (CBS) ― An Orange County immigrant rights activist has been sued by a company that claims he tried to force it to keep hundreds of undocumented workers.

The Orange County Register reports Friday that Overhill Farms of Vernon sued Nativo Lopez and six ex-employees this summer.

In May, Overhill fired more than 250 workers after the IRS determined they'd provided invalid Social Security numbers.

The frozen foods company claims the defendants defamed and extorted the company. They have staged protests accusing the company of racism.

Their attorneys say Lopez and the others were exercising their free-speech rights. Their request to dismiss the lawsuit will be heard Oct. 30.

Lopez heads the group Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana.
