O.C. Investigators Search For Online Scammers
SANTA ANA
Orange County sheriff's investigators are looking for suspects in an online scam that led at least eight job-seekers to reveal personal information to the thieves.
The victims responded to a Craigslist advertisement for what turned out to be non-existent jobs at JetBlue Airways at John Wayne Airport, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. Some victims were told they had appointments for job interviews at the airport, but first they had to fill out job applications online, Amormino said.
JetBlue Airways does not do business at John Wayne Airport.
The victims started showing up at the airport Thursday, Amormino said, looking for JetBlue. They were given fake addresses near the airport and some asked sheriff's deputies for help finding JetBlue, Amormino said.
So far, investigators have documented eight victims, but they believe there are more victims, Amormino said.
"Of course, it's a scam," Amormino said. "They're taking advantage of people who are out of work."
The phone number listed on the online ad, which has been taken down, had a 949 area code and has been disconnected, Amormino said.
None of the victims have reported any unauthorized charges on their credit cards or bank accounts yet, Amormino said.
Anyone with information about the scam is asked to call (866) TIP-OCSD.
