Supervisors Pick O.C.'s 1st Female Sheriff

SANTA ANA Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted 3 to 2 to hire the county's first female sheriff.

Supervisors Patricia Bates, Janet Nguyen and Chair John Moorlach voted for Sandra Hutchens, a 53-year-old retired division chief in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Pending the completion of a state-required background check, she will be sworn-in to succeed acting Sheriff Jack Anderson, who was installed to replace Mike Carona.

Carona, who quit in January, is facing federal public corruption charges.

Hutchens was in charge of the Sybil Brand women's jail in the mid and late '90s and has experience as a union representative.

Supervisors Chris Norby and Bill Campbell voted for Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters, whose candidacy was supported Tuesday by Garden Grove Mayor Bill Dalton and Anaheim police Chief John Welter.
