The head coach for the U.S. Men's Volleyball team, which went undefeated in Beijing in winning its third Olympic gold medal, will ride on Anaheim's 2009 Rose Parade entry, "Crank up the Entertainment," an official said Monday.
Hugh McCutcheon's selection was announced by Mayor Curt Pringle, who
said the team, which moved its headquarters to Anaheim in 2006, has given the city another source of civic pride.
"Hugh led the team to the gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games,
and Anaheim celebrated with and for him and the team," Pringle said.
"We couldn't be more pleased to have him represent Anaheim to the millions of viewers worldwide."
McCutcheon called his upcoming role "a tremendous way to start the new
year."
"Anaheim is like home for me, so I am looking forward to representing
the city on its float," McCutcheon said.
McCutcheon will be the only person riding on the float, "He was the first choice, and we're just pleased he accepted and will be coming out," city spokeswoman Ruth Ruiz said.
The city's float -- emphasizing entertainment venues in Anaheim -- is
the city's 16th Rose Parade entry.
