Police Shoot, Kill Knife-Wielding Suspect

PASADENA, Calif. (CBS) ― Authorities Monday released the name of a man fatally shot by an officer after he allegedly brandished a knife at police.

The man was identified as Alonso Cardenas, 41, of Pasadena, Pasadena police Lt. Keith Jones said.

Police were sent to Summit Avenue and Painter Street about 8:10 p.m. Sunday in response to a possible victim in the area, Pasadena police Cmdr. Eric Mills said.

Officers saw a man later identified as Cardenas standing over 38-year-old Lesbiah Herrarte, who was lying in the street, authorities said. Cardenas allegedly had stabbed Herrarte numerous times in the upper body, Jones said.

When officers ordered Cardenas to step away, he allegedly charged one officer with a knife in hand. The officer shot Cardenas, who later died of his wounds, Mills said.

Herrarte was taken to Huntington Beach Hospital where she had surgery and was in serious-but-stable condition.

Herrarte, who also is from Pasadena, is believed to be the mother of Cardenas's three children, said Jones. The pair had been arguing over custody of their youngest child, Jones said.
